I’m really looking forward to tomorrow – we are going to check out the place we *hope* will be our venue…..The Inn at Celebrity Dairy. It is a goat farm with a victorian revival farm house, most famous for the goat cheese they produce. We love goats – and this place looks beautiful and a little offbeat, just like us.

I’ve been to too many weddings where the food is just mediocre, if not awful. Rancid seafood salad. Wilted spinach. Chewy glazed chicken. YUCK. So, we are hoping to hire our friends, an amazing chef and his pasty-maven wife, to cater our shin-dig. The idea – one big bar-b-que extravaganza. Since we are in the South and the celebration will be in June, why not? We are HOPING that our number one choice of location, a family farm in Franklin County not really accustomed to doing weddings, will come through soon so that we can move forward. Otherwise, we are going to have to find another place that will allow us to bring caterers that are unlicensed for our cookout.

We would like to be within an hour of Durham – any ideas?

Wedding Planners are for Woosays…

…..sorry to all of you professional wedding planners out there – this has nothing to do with your skills or talents, but I’m continually astounded by the compulsion of friends, family and even strangers to suggest that your services are absolutely necessary. First of all, as a second-time-around bride, I have a little experience with this already. Secondly, my fiancee and I are a part of the “cultural-creatives” – why would we want to hand over the design and execution of this day to somebody else? Thirdly, in case you live in a bubble and failed to read the latest news, we are in the middle of a huge recession, meaning there are lots of deals to be had, and everyone has a restricted budget. Finally, there is something to be said for the DIY mentality. Who knows, maybe I’ll buckle under pressure and hire a planner, but for now, I’m counting on readers to help me navigate the pitfalls and perils! And no, we will not be renting chair-covers.

My first wedding would fall under the “big-white” category. It lacked a sense of individuality, and it didn’t even reflect my beliefs. I did what I was “supposed” to do, following Emily Post, buying bridal magazines, picking out dresses for my friends – always seeking the approval of the future in-laws and my own parents. In the end, it was a “nice” day, but what I failed to realize was the solemnity and magnitude of the commitment I was making. But, that was the past, no need to dwell…

Now I have the opportunity to collaborate with the most amazing man on earth to create a day that we will never forget, and I’m so excited for it! My fiancee, let’s just call him “R” for now, is an incredible partner. The foundation of our relationship is solid, and I’m convinced we can weather the many storms ahead together, as a team. So, as a team we are going plan our wedding, in North Carolina where we moved about a year ago, and I’ll be damned if we don’t have fun doing it!
